Every Friday, we publish the week’s most important developments across AI, search, and digital marketing. It’s the public version of the intelligence brief our team reads to run client work: the sources we actually watch, plus our take on what each move means for a business owner. Curated by Spencer K. Wade and assembled in the Lift AI Lab.

The 30-second version
- ChatGPT now drives about 92 percent of all trackable AI referral traffic, and this week it also became a desktop work app. The place your customers increasingly start their research is also the fastest-consolidating channel in marketing.
- Google is rolling out an AI disclosure label on ads, a “How this ad was made” note that flags AI-created or AI-modified creative. Transparency norms for AI ad creative are forming right now, and it’s better to set your stance than have one set for you.
- A new ad channel is maturing fast. ChatGPT Ads added auto-generated creative and expanded into new markets, opening an early, low-competition window worth a small, deliberate test.
What deserves your attention this week
1. AI referral traffic is real, and it’s almost entirely ChatGPT. A study of 6.77 million sessions found AI-assistant-driven visits grew nearly tenfold in 19 months, and ChatGPT is the only standalone assistant sending traffic at real scale, at about 92 percent of the trackable total. The catch: close to 29 percent of those ChatGPT referrals land on a site’s internal search page instead of the right deep page, so people arrive on a recommendation and then hit a dead end. Two jobs follow from this. Optimize specifically for how ChatGPT describes and cites you, and fix your on-site search and internal linking, because that is where a large share of this traffic actually lands. 2. Google is adding an AI disclosure to ads. A new “How this ad was made” section flags whether AI created or modified an ad. It’s automatic for Google’s own AI tools and optional, for now, when a third-party AI tool is used, subject to local law. If any part of your ad production uses AI, deciding your own disclosure stance before a standard is imposed is a trust play rather than a compliance chore. (Source: Search Engine Land)
AI and models this week
ChatGPT became a desktop work app. OpenAI shipped a major update built around a persistent assistant that browses, uses your connected apps, edits files, schedules tasks, and generates slides, sheets, and documents. The new models arrive in three tiers, from most powerful to most affordable. Some early users were confused about where their old chats went, which is an organization problem rather than a capability one, but the direction is clear: these tools are moving from “answer a question” to “do the work.” (Source: The Neuron)
The model price war got louder. The most capable new tier reportedly costs about a third of what the leading competitor charges, and Meta, xAI, and Google are all pushing capable models at aggressive prices, with Google’s next release expected mid-month. The takeaway for any business building AI into its marketing: the specific tool you commit to today is a depreciating asset. Keep it portable, avoid long lock-ins, and make sure whatever you build can swap the underlying model as prices and quality shift. (Source: Superhuman, The Neuron)
Agent security moved from theory to practice. As more businesses point AI agents at their own accounts and data, researchers warned that a single compromised agent could hijack a broader system. If anyone is running AI agents against your marketing accounts, ask how access is scoped and how they guard against manipulation. It’s becoming a question of trust and liability, not just IT hygiene. Search, SEO, and the AI-search layer
The new SEO is “be selectable by AI.” Several independent experts converged on the same model this week, which usually signals a discipline maturing. The old scoreboard was your ranking. The new one is whether an AI assistant can find you, understand you, trust you, and choose you when a customer asks a question. In practice that means investing in clear, deep content about your specific area of expertise, watching for brand mentions in places like Reddit even when they don’t link to you, and dropping the chase for low-quality backlinks that AI systems ignore anyway. It also reframes paid media, because AI systems increasingly fold paid placements into their sense of who a credible brand is. (Source: Search Engine Land)
A genuinely new paid channel is opening. ChatGPT Ads added an overview dashboard, auto-generated ad drafts, and new formats, and went live in Japan and South Korea. Signals point to OpenAI generating ad creative directly on its own platform. This is early and not right for every budget, but for the right business the low-competition window is exactly when a small, controlled test teaches the most. (Source: Superhuman)
Merchant Center loses the “Next.” Google’s “Merchant Center Next” is now simply Merchant Center, the rebuild having become the default. A small housekeeping note for anyone running Shopping or product feeds. (Source: Search Engine Land)
Quick hits
- Some Google Business Profile listings are losing reviews, and review submissions are paused on others. Google has confirmed it’s investigating. If you’re local or multi-location, audit your listings now. (SE Roundtable)
- Search Console’s page indexing report is working again after roughly a three-week freeze. Don’t over-read indexing anomalies from that window. (SE Land)
- New Search Console reporting now shows how your content performs on social and video platforms. (SE Land)
- Google is testing tracking URLs inside search results, worth watching for anyone who cares about clean referral data. (SE Roundtable)
- A targeting tactic reportedly cut invalid Google Ads clicks by about 50 percent. Worth a look if you fight click quality. (SE Land)
- Google reported an all-time usage record. Search isn’t shrinking, it’s moving. (SE Roundtable)
What we’re advising clients this week
Start measuring your share of AI voice. A single “are we visible in AI” number hides more than it reveals. Build a baseline of how the major assistants answer the questions your customers actually ask, sorted by intent. That baseline is becoming the rank tracker of this era.
Fix the on-site search and internal linking AI traffic lands on. With close to 29 percent of ChatGPT referrals arriving on internal search pages, these are now conversion levers, not just SEO hygiene.
Consider one early test in an emerging channel. ChatGPT Ads is cheap and uncrowded right now. That’s the window to learn on a small, controlled budget before it becomes table stakes.
Decide your AI-disclosure stance for ad creative. Get ahead of the standard rather than reacting to it. Positioned right, transparent AI creative is a differentiator.
Keep your AI tooling portable. With prices moving weekly and a new frontier model expected mid-month, avoid long lock-ins and architect anything you build to swap models as the market shifts.
