Somewhere in a marketing meeting this week, one person said, “We need a GEO strategy!” and three minutes later another said, “Right, so what’s our AEO plan”? Nobody asked what the difference was.
There isn’t one worth paying for. GEO and AEO are the same job wearing two different name tags and if someone is selling both as separate services they’re selling the same thing twice.
What Each One Technically Means
Both terms describe one practice, which is getting your content to appear inside the answers that AI tools hand to users.
Read those two back-to-back and the difference disappears. Google’s own guidance for site owners treats them as one group of practices and gives a single set of recommendations for both.
Why The Industry Has Five Names for One Thing
In the last eighteen months, marketers built an entire alphabet to describe one activity:
Every one of those describes the same work of getting cited by AI answer tools. The category is new, no shared vocabulary has settled, and every consultancy wants to plant its own flag on the map.
The Test That Settles It
Anyone who insists GEO and AEO are meaningfully different has to explain what a team would actually do differently on a given workday to pursue one versus the other. The honest answer is nothing, because the daily work is identical whether the target is a Google featured snippet, a Perplexity footnote, or a ChatGPT citation.
The shared checklist looks the same in every case:
The venue changes. The work does not.
What To Actually Call It
Pick whichever term your team already uses and move on. We call it AI search visibility internally because that phrase describes the outcome without borrowing anyone’s slide deck.
The real trap is treating the two acronyms as two disciplines then staffing, tooling, and budgeting for both. That turns a naming problem into a spending problem which is exactly what the current vocabulary is quietly built to do.
The brands that will win the next two years are the ones who stopped arguing about the label and started earning citations.
